Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, with no iron content — which means it cannot rust in the way iron or mild steel hardware does. Rust is specifically iron oxide, and since brass contains no iron, that particular form of corrosion simply isn't chemically possible on a brass lock, badge, or buckle.

That said, brass does react with air and moisture over time in a different way: it tarnishes. Exposed copper in the alloy slowly oxidises on the surface, producing a dull, sometimes greenish or brownish film. This is a surface reaction, not structural decay — a tarnished brass padlock is still just as strong mechanically as a freshly polished one.   3. For visible tarnish, use a natural mild abrasive. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, steel wool, or wire brushes — these can scratch the surface or strip protective lacquer where it's present, making the piece tarnish faster afterward rather than slower.

  • Quick wipe-down: as needed, whenever visibly dusty or dirty.
  • Proper clean and inspection: once per term, ideally timed with other facilities upkeep.
  • Deep clean and polish: once or twice a year, commonly at the start of a new academic session when uniforms and lockers are being reissued or reallocated.

  • Avoid direct contact with rubber or certain plastics for extended periods, as some rubber compounds release sulphur compounds that accelerate tarnishing on brass.
  • Keep locks in the open or slightly ajar position if stored long-term without use, so the internal mechanism doesn't sit compressed, and give the keyway a light clean before locking away.

  • The key turns with noticeable resistance even after cleaning, suggesting internal lever wear rather than surface dirt.
  • The shackle shows visible pitting, deformation, or doesn't retract fully.
  • A lock is part of a master-keyed set and one unit has been damaged badly enough that re-keying the whole set would be simpler than sourcing a matching replacement.
